Pure Placid

Pure Placid is a feeling-first functional fragrance and self-care brand inspired by the Adirondacks, delivering calm, focus, comfort, and reset through scent-led daily rituals. Founded by Marcy Miller in Lake Placid, NY. Every product is made by hand in small batches with clean ingredients and plant-based essential oils — no paraffin, no synthetic fragrance, no phthalates. Candles use 100% soy wax and cotton wicks.

About

  • About Pure Placid: Our mission, ingredients, and the science behind functional fragrance.
  • Our Story: Founded by Marcy Miller, a massage therapist and nurse who discovered scent's power to calm the nervous system as a child. Based in Lake Placid, NY in the Adirondack Mountains.

Brand Positioning

Pure Placid is not a candle company. It is a nervous system company that happens to make candles, linen sprays, body care, and everything else with the same intention: to give you a tool for calm. Scent is the only sense directly wired to the brain's emotional center. One inhale, and you are already in the part of yourself that knows how to be calm.

Tagline: "Choose how you want to feel."

Organizing Principle: Feeling → Ritual → Scent → Product.

Choose How You Want to Feel

Pure Placid organizes everything by feeling. Start with how you feel, find your ritual, then discover the scents and products that support it.

Reset

  • Explore Reset: When your brain feels foggy and you just need a minute to breathe. Bright, clear, and instantly refreshing.
  • Scent families: Mount Marcy (Mandarin, Basil, Sandalwood), Alpine Spice (Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cardamom), Sweet Citrus (Satsuma, Kumquat, Pomelo), Balsam & Clementine (Clementine, Bergamot, Balsam)
  • The Reset Ritual: A 60-second scent ritual to clear mental fog and find clarity.

  • Explore Comfort: When you've been holding it all together all day and your shoulders need to drop. Warm and deeply soothing.
  • Scent families: Cashmere Sweater (Vanilla Bean, Ginger, Sandalwood), Cozy Flannel (Cedar, Saffron, Ambergris), Lemon & Vanilla (Madagascar Vanilla, Meyer Lemon), Espresso & Cream (Coffee Bean, Sweet Cream)
  • The Comfort Ritual: An end-of-day exhale ritual for releasing the weight of the day.

Grounded

  • Explore Grounded: When everything feels like too much, start here. Stable, woody, and reassuring.
  • Scent families: Adirondack Chair (Pine Needle, Cinnamon, Cedarwood), Balsam & Cedar (Balsam, Cedar, Fir Needle), White Birch (Birch, Tonka, Cedar), The Cabin (Peppercorn, Pine, Leather)
  • The Grounded Ritual: A ritual to come back to center when your mind is racing.

Founder

Marcy Miller — Founder & CEO of Pure Placid. Background in massage therapy and nursing. Grew up with childhood anxiety and used scent throughout her life — even before she was conscious of it — to regulate her nervous system. One of her most vivid early memories: a scratch-and-sniff grape sticker in math class transported her instantly to the skating rink, stopping her anxiety spiral and letting her focus. One of the first times she was consciously aware of scent as a nervous system tool. She has clinical training in neuroscience and the HPA axis. Moved to Lake Placid because the Adirondacks were where her nervous system found calm. Personal connection to Multiple Sclerosis — hosts annual MS awareness initiatives including the Moment of Zen candle and The Pierre MS Society Gala.

The Science

Pure Placid's approach is rooted in olfactory neuroscience. Scent is the only sense that bypasses the thalamus (the brain's relay station) and travels directly to the limbic system — the amygdala (emotion) and hippocampus (memory). This means functional fragrance can send an immediate signal of safety to the nervous system in under 200 milliseconds.

Key research foundations:

  • Cedarwood and pine phytoncides lower cortisol and reduce sympathetic nervous activity (Li, Q., 2009)
  • Vanilla and sandalwood produce prolonged anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects (Höferl et al., 2016)
  • Citrus essential oils elevate dopamine and serotonin in the prefrontal cortex (Komori et al., 1995)
  • Olfactory signals reach emotional centers of the brain in under 200ms (Mainland et al., 2014)
